Anything for Bananas

The new born silvered leaf monkey differs considerably from the adults as it has orange fur, white face, hands and feet.

Its skin changes to black within days of birth.

The babies love to suck thumbs and fingers just like human babies.

It takes about 3 months for the orange fur to turn to black.

These monkeys live in groups but obviously the brown one is just a passer-by.

The females help one another out with their offspring.

For a moment, I thought highly of such a helpful guardian.

We were told that bananas is their favourite food although they eat many other things like long beans, peanuts and bread too.

Despite the struggling and squealing of the baby, its guardian threw the baby down when she saw someone offering bananas.
The monkeys were hungry because not many tourists have been feeding them during the raining season.
However, it was no excuse to let the baby fall from 3 feet high.

Its mother quickly came to the rescue...

...and had to give her 'friend' a real dirty look!
I hope the baby didn't suffer brain damage.
Never trust a hungry monkey who would do anything for bananas.

After reading Donna's comment below, I'll add that these monkeys are living in the wild on a historical hill which is called Bukit Melawati.
This small peak was once a mighty fortress built in the 17th century to safeguard the state from Dutch forces.
I am adding the photo below to show you how the monkeys live.
Thank you for the good question, Donna.

  1. Ładnie wyglądają małpie niemowlaki. Małpie mamy muszą chyba być bardzo głodne,jeśli dla jedzenia zostawiają swoje dzieci . Pozdrawiam

  2. Really good photos that you took of the monkeys. Are the monkeys roaming free or housed in a zoo? It is hard to tell from the background. They look very small too, again hard to tell. The babies are so adorable.

  3. It's good they are not threats to human, and vice versa, if they are living wild and the tourists go there! I've never seen such a baby monkey. You know, once there was an orphan baby monkey in a tourist area, which suddenly leaped on my lap! My companions laughed and said it mistook me as her mother. It was feeding on a bottle with milk like human babies. Maybe i should post that photo too!

  7. Thanks for adding where the monkeys live and a little iformation about the spot. I find this really interesting knowing they are free but still looking for kindly handouts from people. Now I see they are not small either. I would not want to get so close to them. Lucky you have a lens to reach them without being right next to them.

My husband has a reative that has over fifty monkeys and chimps. They have them right in the city too - in a house. I do not like this as you can imagine and never went to visit. They call it a monkey sanctuary. They have been collecting money from people for over ten years to build a place in the country for them, and all they built so far was a huge mansion for themselves - and in the country. The poor monkeys still live in the house in the city.

  10. I love monkeys and bananas but love my kids more! I would definitely not trade them in for a banana!! I'm so glad the monkeys are living free, though, and not in a cage.

  12. I love the 'dirty look' ;-) but that is what Mother is all about, being there to catch the offspring when falling (and don't I know it!)

wonderful post! I love your blog!!

  15. Oh, my, not a very good babysitter to drop the baby for a banana! The dirty look is priceless. And how amazing the infants are such a different color at first, you'd think it would make them vulnerable to predators. Great post!

  18. I really like the colour of this newborn monkey. The orange colour is very sweet. I hope there are enough wild fruit trees eg banana, mangosteen in Bukit Melawati to feed the wildlife there so as to be self-sustaining or the authorities looking after the hill to plant more food trees. I have been told not to feed the monkeys as a visitor/tourist.

One, I hope this comment goes through because my old computer which can't update to IE9 can't open your blog despite many attempts.

  21. I have visited Bukit Melawati a few years back.

    There were many monkeys.

Not less than what I can see at Cerok Tokun.

The colour of the baby of a black dusky leaf monkey is orange.

  23. I love the way you've captured them all...the females helping out, the fall, the dirty look!! One...that's amazing! I've never seen such babies. Maybe I'll take a better look at the zoo next time. The last time I visited was to take photos of pelicans and orchids.

  24. Very interesting, poor little ginger. Mothers look says it all. I did see the monkeys in Gibraltar similar situation where they are used to interaction with humans.

  25. What a contrast between the color of the babies and adults! Looks like they have a pretty place to live.

  26. The golden baby is really cute...

  27. Also observed that the allo-mothers (aunts) can sometimes be very bad mothers. And it sometimes appears that the 'aunts' want to take turns to hold the baby so that people will pay more attention to them and give them food.
