Caption - Bird's-Eye View

Welcome to Monday Photo Captions!

Enjoy the captions contributed by fellow bloggers and leave yours for the last two photos.
Selected ones will be posted next Monday with links to your blogs.

Sweepy : Tweet! Here in Birdland, Rudolph has red eyes and black shiny coat! And if you ever saw him, you would even say it glows!

Hootin Anni : He is not MY son! Is he yours?

Genie : Sing a song of sixpence, a pocket full of rye. Four and twenty blackbirds, baked in a pie...

Bananaz : Birds'-eye view of a marriage mediation.

Springman : Anyone seen my cell phone?

Thank you for all your caption contributions.
According to Sean, the birds above are called Asian Glossy Starling.
Sean, thank you for the identification.
I had thought they were the babies of the Asian Koels because these small birds appeared together with the male and female Asian Koels on my fig tree.
In the photo above, they were on a champaka tree.

Caption - Mothballing

Welcome to Monday Photo Captions!

Enjoy the captions contributed by fellow bloggers and leave yours for the last two photos.
Selected ones will be posted next Monday with links to your blogs.

For those who are keen to know, the bigger insect below is a hornet while the smaller one is a moth.
They were both drinking nectar from the longan flowers harmoniously.
No bloodshed was found at the scene.

Stewart M : My biology teacher told that me a wasp mimic would keep me safe - I have a feeling he got it wrong!

Bananaz : What else can you do beside mothballing?

Bom : Oof! I need to lose weight. So much easier to get to the top when you are small and light.

One : Strangely, the pairing of orange and black dominates the runway these days.

Thank you to all who contributed to the captions.

Accidental Bird Captures

So far, I have posted more photos of lady birds than birds.
Dragonflies smile in front of my camera but birds flee from it.
When I brought my camera to the lake for the purpose of shooting ducks, I was pleasantly surprised to encounter some birds along the way.
I consider the following photos as accidental bird captures since they weren't planned for.

The above yelllow-bellied sunbird was drinking nectar from a fire cracker bloom but perched on a ficus tree, looking wary when it noticed me.

This magpie robin has just swallowed an earthworm.

This pigeon was on the road alone looking lost.
I saw 2 adults like the one above with a baby in between, having a picnic in the park early this morning.
It was a cute scene but I didn't have my camera with me.

Although I see this tree kingfisher often, it has not gotten any friendlier over time.
Perhaps I could show you some action shots of this bird diving down to catch little critters sometime in the future.
Currently all birds fly off about 5 seconds after they notice the camera or me.

This is a sparrow which is trying to rescue my wax jambu tree from being eaten up by worms.
The photo has accidentally turned out to be monochrome because someone has adjusted the settings of the camera.
When I turned back the settings, 5 seconds has lapsed so we shall have to bear with this accidental black and white shot.

Please visit GardenWalkGardenTalk for more interpretations of 'Accidental' or World Bird Wednesday for more bird captures.

Asian Koel

This bird may look like a crow but it is actually an Asian Koel (Eudynamys scolopaceus).
It is bigger and its tail is much longer compared to a crow.
It has glossy bluish-black feathers with bright red eyes.

Both the photos above are of a male Asian Koel.

The female looks quite different.
This couple has been hanging around for a few months because of the delicious 'fig' tree that I grow.

The Asian Koel is a brood parasite that lays its eggs on the nest of crows or other hosts.
Today, we feel very excited to see at least 5 young Koels, consisting both male and female.
They were out with the father hanging around the fig tree.

The Asian Koel are largely frugivorous.
(A frugivore is a fruit eater.)
Although the adult feed mostly on fruit, the young do consume insects, eggs and caterpillars.

So far, my hubby and I haven't manage to get any great shots of these birds yet.
Tomorrow we may try disguising ourselves as a bush and hopefully capture more acceptable photos than these.

Note : This vigorous growing tree was purchased from the nursery without a name but I believe it is a fig tree.

In The Air

Sadness in the Air is a poem written by a friend based on the visions he had several months ago.

THERE IS SADNESS IN THE AIR

There is sadness in the air,
It came again TODAY.
Is it from me, inside me, or is it from
OUT THERE?

A Vision:
Of an old woman,
wailing and crying,
amidst the fallen white rubbles of buildings.
Hopeless hands beating bloodied chests
tears flowing unceasingly.
Injured people are groaning from within
While some lay STILL
and breathless.

Sirens blaring from afar,
Drowning the fears of loss and sadness.
People digging for the living,
Whilst from a-distant,
A silent rumble in the earth
Continues to seek
Ever more new victims.

Aug 16, 2010

This is a sad poem that I am reposting because the event may seem familiar now although it was written last year.
The title also coincides with the current theme of 'In The Air' in Roses and Stuff.

What else are there in the air...in my garden specifically?
There are some bees in the air.

I can't seem to ignore these bright looking Canna waving to me in the air.

Have a pleasant weekend and do look out for interesting postings of 'In The Air', at Roses and Stuff.

Watershed Surprise

There is a man-made watershed near where I stay which I do not visit often enough though it is just across the road.

Today, as I took the photo above, I saw something white moving towards me.

Is this a heron?

Recently, I traveled to a Nature Park, paid entry tickets, walk a few miles and climbed up towers to watch migratory birds.
I failed to take a single decent shot of any bird.

At home, this white heron just walked right towards me!
It must have thought I was part of the landscape.

See its reflection in the muddy water?
It came so close that there was no need for zoom lens; not that I have any.
I was hoping that the bird would come close enough for me to take a macro shot of its eyes...

Fat hopes ... for now.
Maybe next time.
