False Start

Desert Rose is blooming beautifully with periwinkle growing wildly behind it.

Skippers seem to be attracted to both the desert rose and periwinkle.
A skipper butterfly is named as such because of its quick, darting flight habits.
I'm happy to see them but as you know, I'm quite happy to see any critters in my garden.

With the 3 collages above, did you START to imagine a nice, neat and colourful garden, filled with butterflies?
Well, that would be a FALSE START.
See reality below.

In reality, Clifford would slam the cockcomb flowers with his face and lie down on them.
In reality, Goldee would look for critters beneath the cabbages and even trample over the cabbages.
In reality, I have too many false starts in trying to tidy up the garden.

I was building a veggie bed to keep the dogs out yesterday.
As usual, the dogs helped out in the garden.
Along the way, the bed changed shape and became a doggie bed.
They lay down on the doggie bed and smiled at me.
What was I thinking?
Another false start!

Watch out for other False Starts at Roses and Stuff.

  2. This is a great idea for 'false start'. I can relate to it alright, I have my own cliffords in my garden doing my digging for me (3 of them!!!)

  6. One, I did start to think that more butterfly and flower shots would follow!! Your pets are adorable despite doing more than their share of 'gardening'in your veggie beds!;)

  7. Beautiful Desert Roses!

Clifford looks so cute resting his head on his new found doggie bed. At least you have natural tillers and pest controllers :)

  8. Oh yes, you and your dog's antics make me smile! We have lots of false starts around here...like the bluebonnet, poppy and larkspur seedlings that have been trampled before they get a chance to grow into anything significant. Good thing these dogs are so sweet!

  9. Tough working with dogs, I know too well. Hard to get mad at them though. I so want another dog, but hard to think about the garden I will have thereafter. Full of love, but not as many flowers.

  10. You have the dog to give you some extra work while kitchen flavour have kitten visiting her potted garden. Malar competes with monkeys to see which get to the harvest first. Looks like the bigger ones are much more challenging to handle. Your cabbage look good and perhaps Goldee helps double checking your cabbage whether any pest were missed.

  11. Oh dear. Gardening with dogs (or chickens come to that) can be very challenging! They seem to have different ideas about where and how things should be planted. Your Skippers there are very beautiful, much more brightly patterned than the ones we see here.

  12. Funny! Yes, I was imagining a tranquil oasis. But I know what it's like to have a dog - they don't understand the importance of plants sometimes! Liked your 'false start'.

  13. Hello One. False starts or not, your flowers are pretty and the photographs are amazing, as usual. I always love your little stories. Cliford and Goldee are characters for sure. When we are gardening, we always have Max and one cat that follows us around the yard, sticking their noses in everything we do.

No. Max does not chase the chicks because they are contained in the Ruber Maid tub. Once they mature, they will not be allowed to free range because we do have 3 cats and a dog--he's bird dog, a German Short Haired Pointer. We also have a fox that wanders through, raccoons, and skunks, so we will have to keep our little hens well protected in their chicken pen.

Have a good week-end. cheers. ann

  14. That's funny about your dogs! They love your raised beds and making themselves comfortable there. Cute dogs. Your flowers are gorgeous and what a lovely butterfly. Have a great weekend!

  15. That's OK, false starts are something every gardener is familiar with. I am glad your dogs are having fun:).

  16. Love to see your doggies, so hensem- and i think you spend a lot of time with them and to keep them clean. My dog pulled out my pandan(s) and morning glory, so i only can have bigger plants/trees in his territory.

  17. Oh dear, that is funny. Only because I can completely relate. I have the same problem in my garden. If its not the voles its the dogs. But you gotta love them. They are the greatest companions. Your photos are so great of them.

  18. I sure know what you mean about dogs' "help" in the garden. We're trying to recover from their winter demolition of the garden. Seedlings are in big danger unless protected from the 12 paws that run amok in our yard!

  19. The dogs enjoy their life, so you are.

  20. Good shots of flowers...

  21. Your post made me giggle...your sweet dogs seem to be enjoying themselves! I'm having the same kind of 'problems' - keeping the dogs away from the veggie and flowerbeds isn't easy...

  22. Clifford and Goldie always make me smile. I'm afraid to admit that they almost stole the show away from your beautiful blooms.

  23. I only have 1 dog. Have to hand it to him for a holey garden! That's our Robbie!

  24. Those flowers are beautiful! I love how vivid the colors are. I have the same false starts in my garden! My dog friends are always willing to "help"!

  25. Diana is amusingly right! They really make gardening much more interesting, don't they! Your cabbages are looking great!

  26. Very cute. I love the way you did those collages--very professional. I think dogs and a graden are not a good match, but you seem like a real dog lover.

  27. One, i am back! Your cabbages look great, however if they dont continue growing to fullness, "sayang"! At least our Jopet when still alive, dont do that. But the kittens climb anything especially the posts of orchids and tugs even on newly growing orchid roots, which take a long time to grow!

  28. Your dogs looks so cute each time, what to do? Sayang hor.

  29. My neighbour has a Labrador and his garden gets totally wrecked. But hey its whatever we find most important. The skipper butterfly, I have heard of, not a visitor in this part of the world though, has the look of a moth don't you think.

  30. Your dogs really enjoy the garden! I can understand your feeling in a way.... I have the same problem here with monkeys!
