Krabi, Thailand

Below are some photos I took in Thailand recently.
Although the first 6 photos were taken at the Tiger Cave temple, there aren't many signs of the temple as I have little interest in buildings and statues.

While I was admiring this little girl who waved at me, a stray dog gave me a fright by licking my arms. I thought that action rather strange and quickly went off to clean myself. I hope I didn't hurt the dog's feelings.

There were many stray dogs, monkeys, cats, pigeons and even chicken. I didn't go inside the temple nor took the 1000 steps that lead to another temple up the mountain. Come to think of it, I might as well have visited a farm. But I do enjoy the encounters.

One man chained a puppy near the vicinity of the temple. He wanted to pet the puppy but the latter probably growled at him out of fear. That angered the man who shouted and was about to whack the pup. Almost immediately, a dog dashed forward from across the street and bowed its head in front of the man. That man ended up petting the dog's head instead and forgave the pup. I could have taken snapshots of the sequence of events on camera but didn't think it was appropriate. I feel amazed with how the dog dissipated anger instantly without words. Most people react towards anger with more anger. The dog just bowed.

The two photos above were taken at the Emerald Pool.
The water is very clear, GREEN and filled with beautiful fishes but it is too slippery to walk.
We were told that there are quicksands nearby so we did not venture around.
This pool itself is very unique and I think if you are nearby, you should visit.
We visited the hot spring which isn't as beautiful but it was amazing that there were many small natural tubs like 'jacuzzi' with warm running water at 50 degree Celsius.
It also came with sulphur which is supposedly good for the skin.

These boats were seen near the hotel we stayed.
There are many beautiful islands out there.
We didn't island hop but visited the shops along the beach.

This is what I found in one of the shops.
I don't know what it was doing there but it was definitely not for sale.
Krabi isn't about dogs but about beautiful islands, friendly people, elephant rides, crystal clear natural pools and good food.
I better end this post with some nice flowers I took from the hotel because it may appear to be 'dog-sided' at the moment.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays in advance!

Check out This or That Thursday for other happenings around the world.

Sweepy : Tweet! Here in Birdland, Rudolph has red eyes and black shiny coat! And if you ever saw him, you would even say it glows!

Hootin Anni : He is not MY son! Is he yours?

Genie : Sing a song of sixpence, a pocket full of rye. Four and twenty blackbirds, baked in a pie...

Bananaz : Birds'-eye view of a marriage mediation.

Springman : Anyone seen my cell phone?

Thank you for all your caption contributions.
According to Sean, the birds above are called Asian Glossy Starling.
Sean, thank you for the identification.
I had thought they were the babies of the Asian Koels because these small birds appeared together with the male and female Asian Koels on my fig tree.
In the photo above, they were on a champaka tree.

Caption - Mothballing

Welcome to Monday Photo Captions!

Selected ones will be posted next Monday with links to your blogs.

For those who are keen to know, the bigger insect below is a hornet while the smaller one is a moth.
They were both drinking nectar from the longan flowers harmoniously.
No bloodshed was found at the scene.

Stewart M : My biology teacher told that me a wasp mimic would keep me safe - I have a feeling he got it wrong!

Bananaz : What else can you do beside mothballing?

Bom : Oof! I need to lose weight. So much easier to get to the top when you are small and light.

One : Strangely, the pairing of orange and black dominates the runway these days.

Thank you to all who contributed to the captions.

Jungle Trekking on an Elephant

One of the highlights in Krabi, Thailand is the Jungle Trekking on an Elephant.
Not only do one get to enjoy the beautiful scenery without exerting any physical effort, the swaying rhythm of the elephant felt good too.
Below are some scenes taken from the top of a swaying elephant.

We started the journey by passing through a rubber plantation.

The foot was used to maneuver the elephant.

My daughter kept asking me if our weight hurt the elephant.
She has a point and I must admit that we human do sometimes take advantage of animals.
However, the elephants were huge and strong and I hope they enjoyed the occasional snacking of foliage during the walk.

Apparently the mountain above is called the Tiger Cave because a tiger stayed there for 37 years.
How did I know?

Look who's talking!
(This photo was taken at the Tiger Cave Temple)

I love the calm and serene look of the lake during the walk.

The 9 month old elephant is being trained at a tender age to follow its mother's footsteps.

Mother and child were given a shower immediately after the one hour walk.
They were given special treatment.

The baby is tied to the mother as it has attempted to run away before.

Mother and child left after the shower.
I am glad the trainer treated them well.
The sharp tool the trainer is holding was not used to hurt the elephants.
(We had our fears and imagination.)
Those were the tools used to clear the bushes that we passed through during the elephant ride.

Linking up with Fabulous Friday.

Christine : On your mark, get set, go!

Andrea : Let's go to the shore now, we've got too much sun already! Look at the whites, they are always in the shade!

Stewart M : While the groom arrives with his friends, the bridal party waits in the background.

Liz : The hunt begins; you take the land, we'll take the water.

Accidental Bird Captures

So far, I have posted more photos of lady birds than birds.
Dragonflies smile in front of my camera but birds flee from it.
When I brought my camera to the lake for the purpose of shooting ducks, I was pleasantly surprised to encounter some birds along the way.
I consider the following photos as accidental bird captures since they weren't planned for.

The above yelllow-bellied sunbird was drinking nectar from a fire cracker bloom but perched on a ficus tree, looking wary when it noticed me.

This magpie robin has just swallowed an earthworm.

This pigeon was on the road alone looking lost.
I saw 2 adults like the one above with a baby in between, having a picnic in the park early this morning.
It was a cute scene but I didn't have my camera with me.

Although I see this tree kingfisher often, it has not gotten any friendlier over time.
Perhaps I could show you some action shots of this bird diving down to catch little critters sometime in the future.
Currently all birds fly off about 5 seconds after they notice the camera or me.

This is a sparrow which is trying to rescue my wax jambu tree from being eaten up by worms.
The photo has accidentally turned out to be monochrome because someone has adjusted the settings of the camera.
When I turned back the settings, 5 seconds has lapsed so we shall have to bear with this accidental black and white shot.

Please visit GardenWalkGardenTalk for more interpretations of 'Accidental' or World Bird Wednesday for more bird captures.

Love and Anger

These ducks are taking a stroll down the path.

I posted a bunch of excited ducks which dashed in every direction and never seem to pause.
Today, I am sharing the calm ones which are found at a different lake.

Instead of chasing after me like the ones I met last week, this one actually fell asleep while observing me.

An expressive duck showed me its LOVE in its own way above.

There seem to  be a peaceful and serene atmosphere.
I believe these ducks are well fed, leading to their calm behaviour.
Then suddenly the atmosphere changed!
Two brown ducks dashed forward angrily to attack a white one...

As you can see in the 3 photos above, the brown ducks attacked and pecked out some white feathers.
I wanted to interview them to find out the reason for their sudden outburst but my daughter chased the brown ducks away to avoid further loss of feathers.

The victim seem fine and still look pretty in the landscape.

Back to peace and tranquility.
A little bit of anger and violence added some excitement.
Imagine a sandwich made of 2 pieces of love and a tiny bit of anger in between.
That's how things appear to be.
There is always the calm before the storm, followed by calm again.

Have a splashing weekend!
