Yellow represents sunshine.

It is associated with joy and happiness.

After removing the lawn, I reserved about 400 square foot of land to grow plants.

Before I decided what to grow, cosmos invaded.
I got rid of some but left most of them where they were because I thought they would be good to attract all the interesting critters apart from looking beautiful.

Below is a Common Grass Yellow Butterfly.

It is a moth, NOT a wasp.

Plain Tiger Butterfly.

Thanks to Nature Rambles, the orange butterfly below is called a Peacock Pansy.
It resembles the Blue Pansy which also appeared on the cosmos.

Don't you just love the orange skipper below?
I'm entering this photo in Picture This Photo Contest at Gardening Gone Wild.
The theme for this month is 'Fill the Frame' and in this instance, it is the bokeh that is filling the frame, not the skipper.

Here is another orange insect.
Come to think of it, there are lots of of orange insects at this time.
Anything to do with Halloween approaching?

Treehoppers suck the sap of the plant.
They may not be healthy for plants but it really doesn't matter to me.
The cosmos has served its purpose of attracting many critters, both beneficial and otherwise.

A lady bug should be a delightful sight for most gardeners, I guess.

Actually, I enjoy these cosmos with or without the critters.

Anyone keen to adopt a grasshopper?

Probably not.
How about a dragonfly?

  1. Wow, so many amazing insects! It seems to me all we get are mosquitos, ants and flies. Sometimes I see white moths, but no butterflies. Thanks for sharing yours!

  5. You can have a "bugs farm" if not a butterfly farm.

Your friends form a good team that attract many of us.

  7. Such cheerful blooms! You seem to get a whole lot of interesting visitors. Love them all! Your orange butterfly is a Peacock pansy. Lovely shot of the dragonfly. I have never photographed a tree hopper. I should be looking out for them now.

    Have a great weekend!

  8. Thanks a ton for the link! You're a sweetheart! You're right...the underneath of the Blue and the Peacock Pansy's wings look almost the same.

  9. Yellow represents beautiful! I see five that would be wonderful images for fill the frame. I agree with NR that you get the most interesting critters. The bug in number 10 is so uniquely colored and moth 6 is really so pretty in every way. All the bugs look so gorgeous against the bright yellow.

  10. I love cosmos. Here, mine are pink and dark pink, and white. My dad used to refer to them as weeds. And rightfully so for once their seed is cast out, you never seem to get rid of them. But I planted them for the same reason you enjoy them: the insects love them. Beautiful pictures again, One. And no, I do not want to adopt any grasshoppers because we have had our invasion this summer. Now lady bugs and butterflies, yes.

  15. I appreciate the devotion to yellow in October. It is a 'happy' color, and a color that will be soon missing from the garden as it grows colder. Happy GBBD!

  28. Send the dragonfly, but you may keep the grasshopper. I have a lot of cosmos growing on a slope I have now named my wild garden, and I think this area attracts more insects than any other space in my yard. The bees and butterflies love it! Your photos are lovely, and they make me want to grab my own camera and head for the cosmos!

  32. I just realized i haven't been here, gone home for the weekend and signal is absurd. The laptop there got some hickups! That critter with hooks seem very unusual, i can't decide what kind it belongs to! I am curious how it looks like with wings open, please try to photograph at that stance. Maybe it will not be as aweful!
