Cattle on the Highway

It's interesting to watch the symbiotic relationship between cattle and birds.
As the cattle graze, birds look out for insects which are being disturbed.

Although there were grass everywhere, these cattle found the grass in the middle of the highway the moo-st palatable.

It is possible that these cattle were already grazing here before the infrastructure was built about 5 years ago.

I would very much like to take close-up shots of birds perching on the cows, looking for ticks.
Unfortunately it wasn't an ideal place to be taking photos, nor to be having a meal in the first place.
Oncoming cars slowed down.
Someone even wound down the window and said something.
I can't be sure if he was talking to me or the cows.
I just hope no one took out the camera and snapped of me.

I'll be back for moo-re photos!

  1. How odd to find cows grazing in a highway median and certainly worth taking pics of. They look very contented out there. I hope they use their turn-signals when pulling out into traffic when they mosey on home. LOL

  2. Living in cattle country here, myself, we rarely see cattle roaming the highways. In cow/auto collisions, seldom are there any winners. You have quite the knack for story telling and your eye for biological relationships adds a nice touch to your stories. cheers. ann

  3. I guess that was their old grazing ground One. After developments, grazing grounds are making a fast dissappearance, poor cows! Now theres only a thin strip of green for them to munch on.

  4. What a sight! I think you need to invest in a good zoom lens, we can't have you taking photos in dangerous places.

  5. This is so cool that the cows find grass just about anywhere. I agree with Patty, you have to be careful. Not all cows are happy when you approach either. I am so glad the cows made headlines today. I love cows and seeing them were they don't belong adds loads of visual interest.

  6. In Australia the farmers call it the long paddock - when there is a shortage of feed, cattle grazing the roadside can sometimes be seen, but not usually near major highways. They looked like they were enjoying themselves.

  14. I see cows and cowboys and cow uncles in my area. Sometimes I pity the cows when humans encroach into their grazing land and fill them up with concrete buildings.
